In Loving Memory of
James "David" Hews
May 1, 1948 - May 19, 2020

It is with great sadness that his family announces David's sudden but peaceful passing at  his home in Honora Bay on Tuesday.

Loving husband of Dora Charlebois-Hews of 47 and a half years.

Loved by his son Michael.
Proud grampa of Kevin and Miranda.
Survived by his siblings Peggy (Pat), Bill (Mary Ann) and Susan (Shane).
Predeceased by his parents Charlie and Biddie Hews of Sudbury.

David was born and raised in the north and went to Laurentian University.
David used his entrepreneurial spirit and his business acumen to succeed in his career.
David noticed when others needed assistance and stepped in to do what he could.
He lived life to the fullest and loved to be on the water, especially cruising in the North Channel.
Travels in Europe and life in retirement on Manitoulin and in Florida, afforded David and Dora with many wonderful times with family, friends and acquaintances.
David was well known for his huge sense of humour with a huge laugh to go with it and leaves behind a void to all who knew him.

Due to the virus situation, a private gathering will take place at Island Funeral Home. However, a memorial will be planned at a later date.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada either online by visiting https://secure2.convio.net/alz/site/Donation2?df_id=1683&mfc_pref=T&1683.donation=form1&s_locale=en_CA&_ga=2.15769206.1717729506.1590157017-1641830842.1590157017

Flowers may be ordered from the Flower Hutch by calling (705) 282-2020.

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.
I’m following the path, God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love,
to work, or to play.
Tasks left undone
must stay that way.
I found that place
at close of the day.
If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, laugh, a kiss
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow,
My life’s been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seems all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now.
He set me free

Dear Dora and Michael,

I am so sorry to hear about David, all of the memories I have of him were up at someone's cottage and we were all having a great time just enjoying each other's company. I will never forget his laugh - especially when David and Uncle Charlie were together - I'd have to see who it was laughing loudest. Our thoughts and prayers are with you now, until we can get together in person.

Sending much love,
Tara

Our deepest thoughts are with you Peggy, Dora and your whole family. David started as a leader with the Birch Street gang in Levack and accomplished much since then. Our family always enjoyed our times on Honora Bay with David leading the troups into the brush pile cabin while our parents laughed. Never did beat him in the skipping stone competitions. RIP, David. Much love to family from Fay, Jim, Jane and Tom

Please accept my sincere condolences to David's family.
We were friends in highschool and competed in track together, David in long distance and I in sprints. If memory serves me correct, David ran a mile in just over 4 minutes which was extraordinary at the time for a highschool student considering Roger Bannister had set the world record at just under 4 minutes in 1955. He was a good friend but we lost touch since highschool (as happens far too often) I wish I had known that he lived so close, I would have looked him up. RIP David

Dora,Michael: Peggy,Susan,Bill: My sincerest sympathy!
If you think you heard thunder resound on The North Channel, think again! In a blur of a moment-engine revved, white hair blowing in the wind, a devious smile with blue eyes flickering sideways checking the landscape of big blue water-The Commander of The Channel--oh,it's David! In life, I have never known a boat lover who charted trips with everlasting, adventurous, educational, geographical memories for Dora, his wife, and me, their cousin. Times spent sailing to Killarney to Mr. Perch to devour fish and chips. Overnight stays with seafood dinner @ The Sportsman Inn or @ Killarney Mountain Lodge. Sunrise ventures greeting high waves of Georgian Bay east checking scattered islands en route to Manitowaning. Another day to Benjamin Islands thru David's eyes -squeezing in inlets and outlets--only to anchor & climb major rocks viewing westward. Now a rush to Meldrum Bay Inn for dinner & visit with Sharin & Bob.
Boat chatter: serious discussions on economics involving stocks, trade, investments, politics and banter. In life--how we lived it! He would have me in tears laughing @ his jokes. No one could laugh heartier than David! At the end of a boat shattering journey, Dave's high powered energy settled @ the home waterfront fireplace. Logs in formation, cocktails poured-- especially his favorite -rum & coke in a tall glass, jam packed with ice!!! With a swipe from a match-- a booming, cozy fire-- as we gaze @ the mirrored, moon-beamed bay of Honora!
Someday, as I stand on my berm gazing westward @ Clapperton Channel-I might catch waves on a mirrored water--feel an instant cool breeze ruffle my hair & glimpse a boat, hearing a blast of a horn, a loud laugh--The Ghost Rider on Channel Water!
I am heart broken & shocked that the man who was a brother to me-- took his final flight! The fire is out! Good night, Dave! Our boating days are over!
SAIL ON! FULL THROTTLE!! TO SUNSET!!! DAVID, MEISTER!!!!

Dear Dora
We are still in shock. Our deepest condolences to you, Michael and family. David was the most alive person we ever met. He always did everything he wanted to do with gusto. A delight of laughter and energy. Now he entertains the angels. No one he met or sat near was a stranger. He treated everyone like a friend. One Easter dinner together and our entire family adopted both of you. We will miss David next Easter dinner. Hopefully we will have you, our lovely Dora. You and family are always welcome into your florida family's arms. To visit or stay. Love, Paula, Frank, Maria, Sal, Ellie, Alan, Heather & Sean.

Dave was full of energy and life. I feel so blessed to have known him. I’m grateful that I was able to spend 5 years on Manitoulin so that we could spend more time together and that my flight to Florida in February got pushed a day, allowing me to crash his Valentine’s fondue dinner with Dora. We had many fun times together. Thank you for your wise advice and for showing everyone who knew you, how to truly have a zest for life. ❤️❤️ Rest easy 🕊 🌿 🤍🤍

Our dearest Dora,

We will never forget how we met you and David 7 years ago on that cruise ship. We instantly became friends. You trusted us so much, you invited us to stay with you in your home after the cruise. From then on we continued our friendship and visited one another in your home in Canada your home in Florida, our various homes on the road in our motor coach and our last get together this last February in Arizona.
We always appreciated David's phone calls and text through the years. I'll never forget his gentle blue eyes, his constant chuckles and laughs, his generosity, and his great taste in wine.
We will be here and ready to help you in any way we can. Im so sad that we cannot be there to give you a real big hug, but we will come when we are allowed. All our love, Tom and Cathy Kohmann

Dave was my friend, mentor and a member of my family. Words cannot describe what a special person he was...he touched the lives of so many with his leadership and fun-loving spirit. He lived every day to its fullest; was always so generous with his time, wisdom and sense of humour. I will miss his laugh.

Miranda & Kevin:
In life there are distinguished people who engage with us @ all times & leave an indelible mark! Both of you were a major part of Grampi's heart which held immense love & pride. Not a day passed-- had your name on his lips! He always delighted in your adventure stories, sports & school. He impressed upon you to read & study hard to attain your goal in life!
Boating enjoyment on the North Channel (which I think-Grampi thought he owned) -especially the Benjamin Islands. There he helped you discover Science! He encouraged you to climb the high rocks instilling no fear! Later dive, swim & snorkel the clear water. Momma Dora provided fancy edibles while Grampi related his latest jokes with exuberant laughter! Teaching how to manoeuvre the boat & enjoy tubing-endless hours frolicking in the water with him by your side constantly! Eventually bonfires on the beach, checking the star studded night while eating popcorn. Florida--the yearly trips-unforgettable excitement involved.
MEMORIES of time with Grampi-just for you! It was SPECIAL! Now sadness prevails heavy in your heart. Eventually it will lighten & feeling of closeness will never leave. All is firmly planted in your mind. Remember all he taught you, he loved you endlessly. Never forget how special you are- the grandchildren! Grampi was devoted to you---that was an honor! I wish you Peace... Love aunti Lori

It is with a sad heart that we write this. Dave and Dora came into our lives a few years back and have been a source of joy and laughter. There has never been a more distinctive laugh than the one Dave possessed. You couldn't help but feel swept away when he was laughing and it was usually a wonderful ride. He respected good conversation and he took pride in knowing the important news of the day so that he could engage in back and forth banter.

His love for Dora and his family was his finest prize. He treated Dora as if they just met and started dating that day. Much can be learned from the way he lived loved and laughed with her.

To all other family members, we can only say how much respect we had for him and would be honored if we could attend the serivce you have planned for later.

Rest in peace my friend of many years. We worked together, played hockey to- gether and partied together and there was no better companion.
