In Loving Memory of
Joseph Peter Mishibinijima
“Zoozep Piiyen”
April 20, 1937 – May 8, 2026

Joe Peter Mishibinijima, age 89, of Wiikwemkoong, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Manitoulin Health Centre. Joe Peter was born in Wiikwemkoong and raised in Murray Hill. He was the beloved son of Albert Mishibinijima-ba and Mary Jane-ba (nee Pangowish).  Joe Peter is reunited with his beloved wife, Marjorie-ba (nee Kaboni), and his sons, Kenny-ba (Vivian Cywink) and Ronnie-ba. He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Margaret (Ralph-ba) Young, Robert Mishibinijima, and Gregory (Sheri) Mishibinijima. His grandchildren: Carla Mishibinijima, Naomi Mishibinijima, Jessica Mishibinijima, Leanne (Raymond) Pitawanakwat, Lindsay Fraser, Manidoo Bineshiinh (Vanessa Young), Mary (Dylan) Mishibinijima, Brooks (Jamie Lynn) Mishibinijima, and Jennifer Mandamin. His 13 great-grandchildren: Jaden, Lucas, Somayah, Kingsley, Cale, Raila, Sabina, Maella, Dawson, Bria, McKinnon, Cohen, and Oliver.

Joe Peter will also be missed by many loving nieces, nephews, god-children, relatives and friends..

While he was born on April 20, 1937, Joe Peter thought he was actually born on April 12, 1937 so he always celebrated his birthday on the 12th instead of the 20th. He was a proud and dedicated farmer, who farmed well into his eighties. When his dad passed down the family farm he promised to keep it as long as he could. During this time he also worked at various lumber camps, and retired from E.B. Eddy. Joe Peter loved his animals especially his dogs, Billie, Barney, and Bobby, who were his loyal companions. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, attending plow matches, and was an avid sports fan cheering on his favourite local teams. He loved the Toronto Maple Leafs and was a Blue Jays fan. Joe Peter strongly believed in maintaining his physical health and he encouraged his grandchildren to do the same. Anishinaabemowin was his first language and he loved speaking it. He was a devoted family man, parishioner and loved sharing stories of his early years on the farm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward the “Wiikwemkoong Nursing Home” or “Holy Cross Church”.

Joe Peter will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
