I’m so very, very sorry to learn of my dear cousin Barbara’s passing. She was more like a sister as our two families lived side by side on the same land as our father’s (who were brothers) grew up on. We had no other immediate neighbours. I recall much goodness about Barbara but one that stands out – she held my hand all the way from our house to the school, on my very first day (of school). I was 6 – she was just 13. Very much a symbol of the young teenager she was but who wore that responsible ‘more adult’ role by her own unselfish and kind characteristics. To her partner Keith, her children Warren, Boyd & Paula and their families, all of whom I know she loved dearly, her brothers and sisters, please accept my sincere condolences.
Barbara, I will never forget you! RIP

My family and I join with my sister and offer our heartfelt condolences to her partner Keith, and children Warren, Boyd (who I met many times in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) and Paula as well as Shane and all of Barbra's brothers and sisters. Barbra has now joined Aunt Marble, Uncle John, her sister Iris as well as our own Mom and Dad. With each who leave us, our once big family garden in Southern Bay, Newfoundland, is diminished, but we will always remember all of you as long as we live.
Rest in Peace dear Barbra.

I recently learned of my sister Barbara’s passing and though not unexpected it still inflicted a, biting sorrow and keen sense of loss, because as was pointed out in another post here, it was yet a further diminishing of the voices in the choir the two families that was to us really one extended family headed by the two brothers to pioneered the settlement of the land on which we all grew up together. In a more poignant personal sense Barbara was a surrogate mother to me for the first four years of my life. This was partly out of necessity to help our mother as she was the eldest of our family of seven children while I was the youngest, and partly out of a special affection that she simply had for this newborn infant, a wondrous thing which to this day joyously defies any quantitative explanation. My firsthand memories of all this are obviously scant but I do remember moments of it with crystal clarity and those moments combined with knowing her later on in life engenders a singular feeling: she was above all else a kind soul, one whose first thought was to help and nurture those in need.

So it is with solemn respect that I extend my condolences to her friend Keith and her sons Warren and Boyd and her daughter Paula and their families, and to all members of the two Bowen families the shared acknowledgement of a profound sorrow.

Rest in peace Barb, we all love you.
