In Loving Memory of
Constable Marc Anthony Hovingh
April 1, 1968-November 19, 2020

Marc passed away in the line of duty
on Thursday, November 19, 2020 in his 53rd year.

Beloved husband of Lianne (Van Egmond) Hovingh.

Devoted father of Laura, Nathan, Elena and Sarah.

Predeceased by parents John and Helen (Zeyl) Hovingh.
Loving brother of Dita, Albert (Betty), Hans (Esther)
and Ernest (Malinda) Hovingh.

Brother in law of John (predeceased), Eric (Evelyn),
Peter (Cathy) and Michael (Karen) Van Egmond.

Son in law of Peter (predeceased) and Jenny Van Egmond.

Marc will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and the Manitoulin Community.

“Marc was best known as a patient, humble servant. His love for Jesus was shown in how he cared for his family and how he helped anyone in need. He was fun-loving and took delight in an endearing tease. He loved sailing, all kinds of building projects and a good strong cup of coffee.
Marc said he was blessed to serve,
and for this he will be remembered most.”

Marc was like a father to so many children in addition to his own, over the years at Assiginack School, whether it was driving them to sporting events in the Hovingh bus or chaperoning field trips. A pillar of our community whose life has had a lasting impact on so many. Lianne, Nathan, Sarah and Elena, you are in our thoughts and prayers. With love, Mark, Heather, Brooke and Dane.

My deepest condolences to you in the untimely and sudden loss of your husband and father, Marc. I am at a loss for words and was shocked when I heard about it on the news on my way home from work last week Thursday. May family and friends surround you with comfort during this time. It was an honour to be able to watch Marc's OPP escorted procession from Toronto to Manitoulin Island online yesterday. It made me reflect on our high school days. Thinking of you this week during the funeral time as well as in the days after when you have to carry on without him. Take care!

Dear Lianne and Family,

I am truly sorry for your loss and so sorry that you and your family have to deal with such a tragedy! The only comfort is knowing Marc is at peace and at home with our Heavenly Father. It was so nice to be able to watch the procession home ... just hearing how Marc was so respected in the community and seeing all the fireman, police officers and residents standing on the side of the roads in their home towns that Marc was being escorted home through was so awesome to see. Thank you, Marc, for your service and Rest In Peace my friend.

I’m sending you big hugs, Lianne, from your high school friend!

My dear Lianne, I am just heartbroken for you. I grew up with Marc in Barrie CRC and then of course in TDCH, where you met him. I remember when you and Marc where dating, and you were just so happy, you thought the world of him! And you were right to think so - I know that there are so few people in the world like Marc. He truly was one of the best human beings I have ever known. He was seriously hilarious, so funny! And caring, gentle, despite his height and broad shoulders. Everyone loved him, respected him. When he was at Calvin, he often offered a ride to my younger sister Janine Huyer who was also going to school there. She loved those rides, he was like a big brother. Lianne, we are all sending our love to you.

For what it is worth to you and your family Lianne, I know from personal experience that your kids make you a proud mom and Mark a proud Dad, day in and day out. Your Children lived up to and served as an exemplar to others what God wants his children to live and mature like... Sarah, Nathan, Elena, and Laura were and clearly will continue to be the best of the best. Marc's memory and legacy will be kept alive by them and their love for life. Our Community, no humanity, was blessed to have Marc, now yourself and your children amongst us... It is clear Lianne everyone is desperately searching for the right words, to comfort and support you and those close to you, and as I too have found, those words do not come easily.. Clearly you are having to reach deep to draw the inner strength needed.. We all must draw on our personal faith in God to weather this huge loss of a great man. A man made great by his faith, his family, and his love of life, played out in the career he dedicated and committed himself to in the service and without boundaries being a guardian of others..

But what I know is this: you are so loved. Marc was so loved. God will be with you, always, just as he has been for all this journey so far. In his love I may send your our love, much love. Hugs, prayers, blessings, healing, strength, everything you need.

You and he have obviously made a huge impact in Manitoulin and are dearly loved. I am sad that I didn’t make the trip up to see you guys there, perhaps April and I and the kids will still be able to do so. So bittersweet to think of all the many times of fun and laughter with Marc - so many good memories! There will be more in time - I know that.

We are so sorry for your loss. This so tragic and no words can adequately cover the sorrow and emotion that this brings. Ginny and I can relate to one aspect and that is the fact that we have a son that serves as a police officer. Our hearts stop every time an incident is reported. We too rely on our faith and prayers for those we love. If songs of faith help, we recommend a song by the Canadian Tenors entitled ANCHOR ME. May the good memories strengthen and encourage you as the days unfold.

Lianne,I knew you from the medical center in Manitowaning when Dianne and I lived there. It is so hard to lose a partner and then for it to be so tragic my heart just goes out to you. May God hold you in the palm of his hand and may you know your family's many friends are to comfort you. I'm just so sorry for you and the children. Jim

I didn’t know Marc personally but a year and 1/2 ago I lost my husband suddenly. He was the officer that came to my house. He was so very nice and thoughtful. I couldn’t have asked for anyone else. I am sure that God has a special place for him.

Lianne, my heart breaks for you and your family. What a shock this must have been. What sorrow you must be experiencing. God bless you with his strong loving arms around you. He keeps track of all your sorrow. He preserves all your tears, as in a bottle. He records each one in a book. (Psalm 56) I pray that he will comfort you.

Our hearts and prayers go out for Marc and his family.
I had the plessure of meeting Marc a few time when he came into Parry Sound Fuels for gas. He was always smiling and friendly and so easy to talk to.

My sincere condolences to all family and friends who knew and loved Mark. I worked with Mark around 1988 with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority near Barrie, Ontario before he joined the O.P.P. I played ball with Mark, camped with him, we enjoyed listening to John Prine and he built a beautiful cedar strip canoe in our shop. Talented and friendly and an obvious inspiration to me as I remember him fondly after all of these years. A true loss for all of us. Take care everyone and be well.

I fondly remember living beside the Hovingh family in Barrie for 6 years in the early 80's.
Mark was always a quiet boy with a great sense of humour. I remember he and Ernest
driving with their dog Tricia in their green Gremlin car. Mark also was responsible for retrieving the chicks his parents kept in their backyard when they snuck under our fence. We didn't mind but our dog couldn't figure out what they were:)
The Porto Family is sending you all hugs full of encouragement and the comfort in knowing that Mark touched so many lives.

Firstly let me thank Marc for his service, and you for supporting him in that career choice, I didn't know him but I have read so many wonderful things about him.

I want to thank you Lianne for opening the funeral and procession to the public, after watching and shedding more than a few tears, I felt a profound sadness at the loss of such a great person, for everyone, but especially for you and your children. I can't imagine what you're going through, but after watching my father in the OPP and knowing the support that will be there for you, that's somewhat comforting.

Know that there are many people holding you i their hearts at this time, and try to stay focused on the good memories.

Lianne and family,

I am so, so sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in our prayers for a very long time.

Marc was such a great friend growing up in Barrie through grade school, high school and church. It sounds like he remained the same joyful, fun-loving, dedicated person he was when we grew up together. Whenever we hung out, I always left being glad we got together.

It was great to see the respect and honor he received for his service and life. The words spoken at the funeral were such a wonderful tribute to the life he lived and an awesome testimony for all who witnessed the funeral and have read the articles that have been posted.

We will continue praying for your pain to be softened and for you to be comforted by our Father. With whom we know he is with now resting.

Believers Who Have Died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words

I would like to send my sincere condolences to the family of Constable Hovingh. As I work in the Private Security Industry I have seen the hard and dedicated work the brave men and women members of the Ontario Provincial Police do in the field and the dedication they have in protecting the public each day and making our society a safer place to live and work. I am very thankful for the work that the Ontario Provincial Police Officers do, and have had many positive interactions with members of the Police Service through work, and my prayers go out to all those who continue to serve the public and to the friends and family members. Thank you for your dedicated service to the community.

This is a tremendous loss that will be felt by so many, that words can not possibly describe. I did not know Marc, the out pouring love for this man is immeasurable. Marc gave himself to so many, and then gave the ultimate sacrifice answering the call to duty. He made this world a better place by doing the right thing. It is an individual like Marc Hovingh whom we should all think of when we are looking for strength and guidance in our day to day lives.
