In Loving Memory of
Ralph Stanley McNeil Batman
December 21, 1929 - April 18, 2020

Passed away peacefully at the Manitoulin Centennial Manor on Saturday, at the age of 90.

Predeceased by his wife Frances Batman (nee. Ferguson). Loving father of Dennis of Sudbury, Paul (predeceased) (Jackie) of Little Current and William (Cheryl) of Sault Ste. Marie. Grandfather of Rebekkah (Brian), Matthew, Phillip (Erica), Kyle (Leeann) and Cory (Rhonda). Great grandfather of Andrew, Ashton, Brandon, Bryce, Griffin, Evie and Maible. Predeceased by his siblings Ruth (Harold) and Gerald and siblings-in-law Doug Ferguson, Patricia (Harold) Clark, Ruth (Roy) Dunlop and Wilhelmine Batman.

Ralph Batman was a lifetime resident of Sheguiandah and thoroughly enjoyed a long and happy life on Manitoulin Island.

Ralph worked a number of jobs as a young man driving the mail truck, trucks at the quarry, a labourer at Manitoulin Gardens, a tinsmith assistant and other scarce jobs in the '40's. In 1950 he trained under Rudy Joly and soon opened Batman's Plumbing and Electrical. He was an excellent tradesman who developed a wealth of skills through the years. Later in life he started Batman's Trailer Park and worked timelessly to expand the business each year and achieve a huge success. When retiring at 69 he thought he'd like to do it all over again and even better. Ralph was an extremely social man who thoroughly enjoyed running a business that exposed him to so many people from near and far.

Ralph and Frances (Ferguson) were married at 21 years of age and built a small home on the Batman Homestead in 1950. Raising three sons was their number one priority and they made an outstanding parenting team. Ralph could never do enough for his sons right up to the very end.
Hard work and a positive attitude allowed him to meet success in all of the goals and challenges he faced in life. Ralph always had a well thought out plan ahead of time whether it involved marriage, family, work, the unexpected or pleasure.

In his retirement years he spent hours socializing with the people of Manitoulin, especially at many auctions. In recent years he and Deanna attended as many church and community dinners and events as possible. We often wondered where he got all of his energy and enthusiasm.
His family was fortunate to spend his 90th birthday with him in November when he was still in good health and could enjoy their company to the fullest. Ralph was blessed with a long and rewarding life because of his social skills, good health, positive attitude and dedication to hard work. So many people have recently commented on what a gentleman he has always been. We shall miss him dearly and remember him well.

A private visitation will be held
at Island Funeral Home
on Tuesday, April 21, 2020
followed by a private family interment.

A memorial service will be arranged at a later date.

Donations may be made in Ralph’s honour to
Daffodil Terrace in Sudbury,
Canadian Cancer Society
or Manitoulin Centennial Manor Aux.

Hearts are sad today with the passing of Ralph. Always the gentlemen, kind, considerate and giving. Many great memories of this man. One vivid one is a truck with garbage and Trailer Park young people going to the dump and all with smiles when they returned as they were always treated with ice-cream and candy. He will continue to live on in all the precious memories we have. May you rest in peace dear friend.

Uncle Ralph was a true gentleman and had so much class; I always said he was a social butterfly. He loved going to auctions to talk to the many people he knew and yes sometimes to buy, even if he didn't need it. I am sure he knew 80% of the people on Manitoulin Island and many off the Island. I will truly miss him, he was like a second father to me.
Love you Ralph

My condolences to the Batman family. Ralph was an amazing man who was loved and respected by so many. I haven’t seen Ralph in so many years, but I have many great memories of him from Batman’s campground. Since I was twi weeks old my parents brought me to Batman’s every summer. We had so much fun, I never wanted to leave. Ralph always came by to say hello, sit by the fire with my family and talk about everything. My family lives on the Manitoulin Island and Ralph had been to some of the family functions through the years. I will always remember Ralph with great fondness. ❤️

Will, Kadence and I will always remember Ralph and his kind and giving spirit. Even last summer he was there to visit my Gram (Ruth Hall) at the Manor several times a week, and always with some treats to fill her fridge. I always felt better knowing that Ralph was there for Gram when we couldn’t be. He was truly a gift and brought light and joy to everyone he talked to. We wish we could be there with the family this week. We hope to share our condolences in person in the near future.

I again renewed my friendship in the late 90"s when I started working in Little Current. I spent many hours in my business kabitizing with Ralph in my hair shop. He was a wonderful man and the definition of a Gentle Man. He will be greatly missed. Heaven surely has an Angel with Ralph at the helm.

Please accept my most heartfelt condolences at this sad time. Ralph was one of one of my favourite people. I have known him my whole life - every restaurant my family has had over the years (and there were several) would see Ralph dropping in for a snack or a coffee whenever he was working in our area. Ralph really loved music and attended shows across Manitoulin regularly. He always made a point of personally telling those entertaining on the stage how much he enjoyed the evening and the performances. Ralph was the absolute best example of a 'gentle man'. I will miss looking out and seeing him in the audience and my chats with him. We will all miss his smile. XO

I am one of Ralph's "off island" friends. When we bought our Sheg cottage in 2000, Ralph was one my first neighbours/friends I met. Over the years, he became a raspberry customer after I took over from Glen Cannard. I used to walk over the bridge to see/visit Ralph and his King (German Shepherd). Ralph never neglected to stop and talk to me when driving past my cottage in his golf cart to Elmview Cemetary to put flowers on his wife's grave. I would bring up peaches from Niagara for Ralph and we would sit on his patio and have a cold beer. Of course, we met MANY times at auctions/community suppers over the years. Yes, Ralph was a gentle man!! He and Deanna were a special duo the last few years--so good for each other. I am sad that I will not be able to see/visit Ralph at the Manor when I come up to cottage this year. Yes, he will be missed/remembered by so many people--especially his family and Deanna...

Very sad to hear that one of the nicest people I knew has passed away.
I lived next to Batman's tent and trailer park for a time and Ralph let me play down there in the amusement arcade and in the summer I raked the beach and the leaves for pocket money. We moved back to Sheg and in the winter we'd make maple syrup and I always gave him a jar just because he was a nice guy.
As everyone says, Ralph was a true gentleman and a kind man. Living in England and grown up now I still think of those days at the camp site and working for Ralph as a kid.
He will be missed.
