Rebecca Josephine McGregor
(nee Pangowish)
October 2, 1933 - January 8, 2015
Honouring our Volunteers
Rebecca was instrumental in ensuring
that the city of Sudbury has a viable
and effective housing program for
native families and individuals.
Rebecca served as President of the
Native People of Sudbury
Development Corporation from 1983
until 2008 when she retired from her
volunteer position. Rebecca was then
made an honorary board member.
To honour her 25 years as President,
the NPSDC presented Rebecca with a
plaque in late 2008. A decision was
also made by the NPSDC Board to name our senior citizen’s
building on Bruce Street, Sudbury in Rebecca’s name in recognition
of the many years and countless hours of unpaid work which she
devoted to the corporation. (adapted from NPSDC Newsletter 2012)
Rebecca enjoyed speaking Ojibway, her first language, she enjoyed
playing bingo, going to the casino, spending time outdoors and
was one of the original volunteers who helped establish minor
hockey in Birch Island.
Rebecca passed away peacefully at the Manitoulin Lodge
Nursing Home at the age of 81 on January 8, 2015.

The Native People of Sudbury Development Corporation Board of Directors and staff offers our deepest sympathy at the passing of Rebecca. Rebecca was a cornerstone of our corporation; without her insight and assistance many Native families and individuals would have been without proper housing in both Sudbury and Espanola. Rebecca's many hours of volunteer work ensured generations of families had, and still have, safe, decent and affordable homes in which to raise families. Her dedication to this cause positively effected countless families and individuals. She will be greatly missed.

I worked very closely with Rebecca during the many years that she was President of Native People of Sudbury Development Corporation (NPSDC). Without fail, her main concern was for the well-being of the children--they needed a safe, warm and affordable home in which to live and grow. The many years of active volunteer service Rebecca provided to NPSDC ensured this outcome--it is a gift that she has proudly given to the Native community that will (and has already) lasted for generations. Rebecca's insight, sense of humour and kindness will be missed by all who knew her.

Sending prayers for Aunt Rebecca for her journey to be with her loved ones gone before her. May she rest in peace and see the light of the face of God. Wishing I could have made the trip up and hoping the family know I am thinking of them in their time of great sadness.
