ANDREW WILLIAM “BILL” FERGUSON
December 6, 1940 – September 28, 2013
Andrew William “Bill” Ferguson passed away suddenly at the Mindemoya Hospital on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the age of 72.

Predeceased by beloved wife Betty. Survived by loving partner Kathleen Dougherty. Cherished father of daughters Beth (Joe Ruzicka) of San Diego, and Jennifer of Halifax, NS. Proud grandfather of two grandchildren Emma Elizabeth Ruzicka and Andrew Joseph Ruzicka. Dear brother of Ken (Linda), Jim (Linda), and Mary Lynn Sorel (Gerry). Loved by Kathleen’s son Jonathan Bibler. Missed by Kathleen’s father James (Marilyn) Dougherty Numerous nieces and nephews. Remembered by brother-in-law Doug McCorkindale (Irene predeceased) and sister-in-laws Joan Kennedy (Ian) and Brenda Colburn (Rob). Bill will be greatly missed by his canine friend Pilot. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Island Funeral Home. Funeral Service at 2 pm Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Little Current  United Church with Rev. Faye Stevens officiating. Interment in Green Bay Cemetery. Donations to Manitoulin Health Centre Auxilary or Little Current United Church would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted with Island Funeral Home, Little Current. www.islandfuneralhome.ca.

After a promising 10-year career at INCO in the mechanical department, the call of his beloved Island was too much for Bill to resist and he and Betty purchased Silver Birches Resort in Honora Bay in 1972, operating and much expanding its services for over 30 years until their retirement and making many friends from all over North America in the process. Bill dedicated a great deal of time and effort to increasing the profile of the tourism industry on Manitoulin, encouraging other tourist operators to also improve and modernize their facilities. He was active in marketing Manitoulin to Ontario and the mid-Western United States through his time at Silver Birches and also following his retirement. He remained the first-ever honourary director of the Manitoulin Tourism Association. Bill was also a pilot and, through the series of aircraft he had, logged thousands of hours in the air, exploring Canada and the United States with Betty, his daughters, friends and, often, his dog Pilot. Bill was a natural problem-solver, especially when a situation posed mechanical, electronic or construction challenges and he was always ready to help friends and neighbours solve their problems. He was particularly generous in this way and would not leave someone else’s problem alone until it was solved to his satisfaction.

Visitation 2-4 & 7-9 pm Wednesday at Island Funeral Home

Rev. Faye Stevens officiating.

Beth and Jenny,
So sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. Some of my best memories are from the summers the gang and I spent working at Silver Birches for your parents. They were both wonderful people and so good to us. Bill could always make me laugh... he had a great sense of humour.

Hi Beth, so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. My condolences to you and your family. The business your parents built was a shining example for future business on Manitoulin. I have wonderful memories of going to Silver Birches to horse back ride in the late 70s and early 80s. I remember delivery worms and other bait there as well in the 80s for my dad's business. My thoughts are with you.

Our condolences to all members of the Ferguson family. Bill will be sadly missed. My best childhood memories are the few visits with my dad to the family farm and hanging out wth Bill, Ken and Jim. Whether it was learning to fish with a pitchfork or ride a motorbike, there was always something new to experience with the Ferguson boys. Later the visits to Silver Birches were always a treat as Bill was always the perfect host. I will miss him and share in your loss.

Our sincere sympathy to all members of the Ferguson family and friends, especially Ken, Jim and Mary Lynn, Beth and Jennifer. We will miss Bill. We visited Bill, Betty and familly many times at Silver Birches and at family reunions on the Island and elsewhere in Ontario. He often visited with us in K-W during his tourism promotions and caught us up on Island news. We have great memories of Bill and hope that you are comforted by good memories as well.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I didn't know Bill well, but on the few occasions that we met, he struck me as a gentle and gracious man. He and my father were great friends and my Dad accompanied Bill on several of his flights to the States where they had some pretty hairy adventures in the air and on the ground (some involving duct tape). But mostly, they spent many an hour sitting around chewing the fat and enjoying each other's company. And by all accounts, Bill was excellent company! Please accept my condolences.

Condolences to all. Bill was a stand-up guy and, like me, a compulsive tinkerer. I knew him both personally and professionally, and called on him often to sort out broken stuff that was beyond my ability to fix. I hope he is interred with a voltmeter and a couple of wrenches, because wherever he winds up, there will be things that need mending.

My deepest sympathy to Beth, and Jenn and their families. Bill was a man of great knowledge with a tough love kind of attitude. I worked for he and Betty for nearly 6 summers at Silver Birches. I learned how to nicely bake a stuffed trout from Bill, and serve customers with respect, and to always be punctual for work. He was a proud, strong man who always held his with dignity. He will be missed.
